How Does LASIK Work?

The LASIK procedure can correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism in those who qualify. If you require glasses or contact lenses to see, those visual aids correct your natural refractive error and allow you to experience clear vision.

Living with refractive errors can be burdensome. It requires maintenance costs for the upkeep of glasses and contacts in order to continue living life with crisp, clear vision.

Refractive errors are very common and are often caused by an abnormal shape of the cornea or an eye that is too long or too short. When light enters the eye, it must first pass through the cornea.

The cornea, which is the clear covering at the front of the eye, works much like the lens of a camera to bend and focus light to create an image on the retina. This process is called refraction.

In order for your brain to produce a clear image, this light must be able to hit the retina appropriately. During the LASIK procedure, a laser is used to create a flap in the cornea, which is a thin layer of tissue that is folded before treating the cornea.

Your vision is then corrected by reshaping the cornea using the excimer laser. Afterward, the flap is then put back in place by your LASIK surgeon.
Once this is complete, it will allow you to experience crisp, clear vision without as much dependence on your glasses or contact lenses. The LASIK procedure is a safe and effective method to reduce your dependency on visual aids.
However, you must first qualify as a good candidate before you can schedule the procedure.

What Happens During LASIK?

Your surgery will take place in our state-of-the-art surgery center equipped with the latest technology and conducted by a highly trained medical team performing LASIK surgery since 1999. The LASIK procedure is also relatively short, lasting only about thirty minutes or less.

First, your LASIK surgeon will numb the surface of your eyes with medicated eye drops. A special laser called a Intralase laser will use cool laser light to create a thin flap.

Next, your LASIK surgeon will use the excimer laser to reshape the corneal tissue that lies beneath the flap. Once the reshaping process is complete, your LASIK surgeon will reposition the flap on the cornea to allow for proper healing.

During the LASIK procedure, your LASIK surgeon at Eye Physicians, PC will utilize some of the most advanced technology and equipment available to ensure optimal outcomes. This technology includes two lasers, the Intralase to create the flap and the excimer laser to reshape the cornea.
